Social Enterprises

Starting and running a social enterprise can be the most exciting and rewarding business venture you will ever be involved in, but it can also be the most difficult and frustrating!

Having started and run social businesses personally, and am still a board member of one, I know the challenges that face the social entrepreneur.

As a graduate of the Dartington School for Social Entrepreneurs I am familiar with the array of helpful courses and training available which will get you on the road to starting your business, and I am fully supportive of those programmes.

However, many social entrepreneurs focus on the operational delivery, and do not develop their understanding of all of their “customers”. Most focus on beneficiaries and outcomes (quite rightly) and not on the wider customer stakeholders that can make the difference between grant reliant and self sufficient.

That is why the main focus of my work in social business is split into two areas: Impact measurement to demonstrate the value created and sustainability through Sales. Generating leads, converting leads, managing customer relationships and making sales.

If you have run a social business for long you will have learned the hard way that a brilliant project, excellent service, or fantastic product is not a guarantee of success. Reliance on grants that require outcomes can be helpful to kick start your business and should always be sought where it supports your aims, but developing your sales will create the sustainability after the grants are gone.
